Surfrider Foundation Europe and .becoming respond to Trump’s gulf renaming with a bold new initiative

BRUSSELS, BELGIUM – When U.S. president Donald Trump unilaterally rebranded the Gulf of Mexico as the Gulf of America, Surfrider Foundation Europe, in collaboration with creative agency .becoming, turned this move into a rallying cry for ocean conservation. Enter Make The Ocean Great Again—a campaign that flips the script on political absurdity and highlights the urgent need to protect our waters.

If politicians can rename bodies of water to suit their own agenda, why not reclaim these spaces for the greater good? With this initiative, Surfrider Foundation Europe has reimagined European waters on Google My Maps, assigning names that tell a deeper story in environmental responsibility.

The Atlantic Ocean is reborn as the North Atlantic Right Whale Oasis, the Balearic Islands Beaches become the Free from Harmful UV Filters Coast, and other coastal sites across Europe receive names that champion a vision of clean, thriving marine ecosystems.

This symbolic act serves as more than just a creative statement—it’s a call to action. Our oceans, rivers, and coastlines are not political trophies; they are shared, life-sustaining resources that demand our respect and protection.

Surfrider Foundation Europe invites the public to contribute by sharing the campaign video and the map on their social media platforms: @surfriderfrance and @surfridereurope.
